Ganderbal, March 20: The Department of Kashmiri at Government Degree College Ganderbal organized a Naat competition to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan, bringing together students and faculty in an event filled with spiritual reflection and talent. The event aimed to foster a sense of community and promote the importance of moral values and self-expression among students.
The competition commenced with a soulful recitation of Quranic verses by Dr. Ghulam Mustafa followed by a meaningful translation into Kashmiri by Dr. Ashiq Hussain Mir. The session was expertly moderated by Dr. Nusrat Jan HOD of the Kashmiri Department.
The event’s first performance featured a beautiful Kashmiri Naat by Riyaz Haqaq whose melodious voice captivated the audience. In his keynote address Professor Mujeeb Kawoosa Vice Principal of the College highlighted the significance of such events in providing students with an opportunity to showcase their talents while reinforcing the values of kindness, respect, and spiritual growth. He also encouraged the department to continue organizing similar activities in the future.
Dr. Nusrat Jan, in her enlightening lecture, shared insights on the traditional perspective of Naat and its cultural importance within the Kashmiri community. The competition itself saw an impressive turnout with thirteen students participating in the Naat performances. Each participant brought a unique flavor to their presentation, mesmerizing the audience to the extent that many were moved to tears. The students were evaluated by a panel of faculty members, Prof. Mujeeb Kawoosa (HOD Mathematics) Dr. Sameera Siraj (HOD, Zoology) and Dr. Tawseef Ahmad Parray (HOD Islamic Studies) who served as judges. Sabreena earned the first rank, while Saiqa Bashir and Kamran Nazeer tied for second place. Arsalan Nazir and Mehraj Altaf secured third place.
To wrap up the event, Dr. Ashiq Hussain Mir delivered an impactful lecture on the true stature of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), leaving the audience with valuable reflections on spirituality. The event concluded with the distribution of certificates to the winners and participants, followed by a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Nusrat Jan who expressed gratitude to all those involved in making the event a success.
