Srinagar: Colorful shikaras became the center of attraction for G20 delegates when they were taken around Dal Lake.

The delegates loved the shikara ride so much that the organizers decided to arrange another round on Wednesday morning.

As a part of their itinerary, the delegates who arrived in Srinagar were taken on a Shikara ride in Dal Lake.

“They seemed very happy though they didn’t talk to any of the Shikarawala. We just got a communication that they will be going on a second Shikara ride tomorrow,” said Wali Mohammad Bhat, president of Shikarawala Association.

Local shikarawalas said the delegates couldn’t explore the entire Dal Lake on Monday due to the time constraint.

“It is probably that the delegates have expressed their desire to explore Dal Lake in a Shikara again. Foreigners have always loved houseboats and shikaras of Kashmir,” he said.

A Shikarawala whose boat the delegate board, said the delegates were constantly praising the beauty of Dal Lake.

“They are used to water activities but might have not seen something like Shikara anywhere. Kashmir is the only place where boats are decorated in this manner. Tomorrow, they will enjoy the ride, ” he said.

Pertinently local artisans and craftsmen had meticulously decorated the shikaras with intricate patterns, reflecting the rich artistic heritage of Kashmir. Each boat showcased a unique combination of vibrant hues, ranging from deep blues and emerald greens to radiant yellows and fiery reds.

The delegates were seen capturing the awe-inspiring scenes with their cameras, capturing the essence of Kashmir’s beauty and the vibrant spirit of its people.

An official said the delegates shopped Shikara souvenirs at stalls in SKICC.

Shikara ride is an important constituent of the Kashmir itinerary of tourists. The government is eying a GI tag for shikaras.
