Srinagar: Doctors at Fortis Hospital Mohali successfully treated a 61-year-old man suffering from a kidney tumour and severe prostate-related complications through advanced robotic surgery and Rezum Water Vapor Therapy.
The patient was suffering from Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that had caused severe urinary obstruction and major upper urinary tract complications. He had already lost the function of his right kidney, while his only functional left kidney was found to have a tumour.
The complex procedure was carried out by a team led by Dr Rohit Dadhwal, Senior Consultant, Department of Urology, Andrology and Robotic Surgery at Fortis Mohali.
According to doctors, the patient had been experiencing interrupted urine flow, frequent urination and general malaise before seeking treatment at the hospital. To preserve the patient’s only functioning kidney, doctors performed a robot-assisted partial nephrectomy, successfully removing the tumour while saving the healthy portion of the kidney.
The urinary obstruction caused by the enlarged prostate was treated through Rezum Water Vapor Therapy, a minimally invasive procedure that uses water vapour to shrink prostate tissue and improve urinary symptoms.
Doctors said the patient recovered smoothly after surgery and was discharged on the third day. The final pathological report confirmed complete removal of the tumour.
Speaking about the case, Dr Dadhwal said robotic surgery offers better precision in kidney cancer treatment and helps preserve kidney function while ensuring effective tumour removal. He added that Rezum therapy is a painless day-care procedure especially beneficial for patients at high surgical risk and those wishing to preserve fertility.
“This case highlights the immense benefit of advanced robotic surgery combined with innovative minimally invasive therapies like Rezum. We were able to preserve the patient’s only kidney and significantly improve his quality of life,” Dr Dadhwal said.
