Flood threat looms large in Kashmir; Jhelum water level at Sangam crosses danger mark

SRINAGAR: Ghost of the 2014 floods has returned to haunt Kashmir as Jhelum has crossed the danger mark at Sangam.

An official of the Irrigation & Flood Control Department said the water level at Sangam gauge was 18.18 feet which is above the ‘flood alarm’ mark. It is three feet below the 21-ft mark when a flood is declared.

At Ram Munshi Bagh, the water level was 12.50-ft, nearly 3.5-ft below the alarm level of 16 ft, and 4.5-ft below the flood level of 19 ft.

An official said the water level at Asham in Bandipora was at 6.74-ft against the 13.5-ft mark when the flood alarm is sounded in north Kashmir.

The official said the water level in Vishow Nallah at Khudwani was 10.61m. while the nallah Lidder at Batkoot was flowing at 1.31 m.

At least eight persons including a driver and conductor were rescued along the Srinagar-Sonmarg highway on Wednesday, officials said.

“Due to landslide at Bajri-nallah and Chenni-nallah on SSG road, two passenger vehicles were stuck on Zojilla road along with eight passengers. However police party Sonamarg reached the spot and rescued them,” an official said

Two nomadic families along with livestock near Chamgund Bridge in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday evening.

The disaster management department said 4 to 5 persons were trapped in River Ans, in District Reasi.  SDRF team rushed to the spot and rescued them safely.

There was a breach in nallah at Chamgund in district Kulgam. Nomadic families were rescued. Disaster management said the situation is under control.

Meanwhile, schools and educational institutions in Srinagar, Pulwama, and other districts have been shut due to incessant rains and waterlogging.
