First batch of Hajj pilgrims leaves for Saudi; Governor flags off first flight

Srinagar, July 14: The first batch of 820 pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir left for Saudi Arabia on Saturday to perform this year’s Hajj pilgrimage.

Special buses from the Srinagar Hajj House in Bemina area took the pilgrims to the Srinagar International airport early on Saturday.

Authorities said four Air India flights will be carrying them to the West Asian nation.

The last flight of Hajj pilgrims will leave on July 25.

After an additional quota of 250 seats was allowed to the state by the All India Hajj Committee, over 10,000 pilgrims from the state would perform this year’s pilgrimage.

The first flight carrying the pilgrims will return here on August 25 and the last on September 7.

Governor N N Vohra flagged off the first flight of 340 Hajjis for Madinah Munawarrah which left from the Srinagar International Airport this morning.

Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, Advisor to Governor; Dr. S.P. Vaid, DGP; Baseer Khan, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir; Shahid Anayatullah, Secretary Revenue; Dr. Syed Sehrish Asgar, Deputy Commissioner Budgam were present on the occasion.

Governor interacted with a number of Hajjis and wished them a safe journey and a highly satisfying Hajj.

This year 10,292 Hajjis (including 518 Hajjis who will embark from New Delhi) will be proceeding for Hajj. They will travel in daily flights during 14th July – 25th July, embarking from the Srinagar International Airport.

The First flight of 340 included 179 Male and 161 Female Hajjis; of whom 203 Hajjis were from District Anantnag; 6 from Bandipora; 26 from Baramulla; 20 from Budgam; 6 from Ganderbal; 4 from Kulgam; 6 from Kupwara; 16 from Pulwama; 52 from Srinagar and 1 from Shopian.
