Srinagar: Kashmir based international powerlifting athlete Fardeem Hussain has been appointed Captain of Team India for the upcoming World Powerlifting Championship 2025, set to take place in Italy on November 25.
The 22-year-old athlete, who has dominated the national circuit, shot to global prominence last year after clinching three gold medals at the World Powerlifting Championship 2024 in Bangkok—becoming the first-ever powerlifter from Jammu & Kashmir to achieve such a milestone.
His performance in Bangkok cemented his place on the international stage and paved the way for his elevation to team captain this year.
“I recently received the call for this year’s World Championship, and what truly surprised me was being chosen to lead the Indian team,” Hussain said. “I’m training intensely and hope to bring home another gold.”
Calling it a lifelong dream to represent India globally, Hussain said leading the national squad comes with immense responsibility. “This year is about pushing my limits, breaking barriers, and bringing the title home for the country,” he added.
Alongside his international success, Hussain has built an exceptional record in domestic competitions. He is a National Powerlifting Champion, North India Champion, and a multiple-time State and District Champion, consistently proving his dominance across competitive levels.
Hussain said he has been rigorously preparing for the championship over the past six months, focusing equally on training and nutrition. Apart from his own preparations, Hussain is also guiding young local athletes. “I’m mentoring a few students who are set to take part in national-level competitions next year,” he said.
