Riyadh, May 27, 2025 – Eid ul-Adha 2025, one of the most important festivals in Islam, is expected to be celebrated in Saudi Arabia on Friday, June 6, depending on the sighting of the Dhu al-Hijjah crescent moon on Tuesday, May 27.

Known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” Eid ul-Adha commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah. The celebration follows the completion of Hajj and falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Gulf Region

The Saudi Supreme Court has urged Muslims to look for the crescent moon on the evening of May 27 (29 Dhul Qaadah 1446 AH). If the moon is sighted, Dhu al-Hijjah will begin on Wednesday, May 28, making Arafat Day fall on Thursday, June 5, and Eid ul-Adha on Friday, June 6.

If the moon is not sighted on May 27, the Islamic month will begin on Thursday, May 29, pushing Eid to Saturday, June 7.

Countries like the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, the US, UK, France, and Canada typically align their Eid celebrations with Saudi Arabia.

India, Pakistan, and South Asia

In India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, and Brunei, the moon will be sighted a day later, on Wednesday, May 28.

  • If sighted, Dhu al-Hijjah will begin on Thursday, May 29, and Eid ul-Adha will be observed on Saturday, June 7.
  • If not sighted, Eid ul-Adha will be celebrated on Sunday, June 8.

Significance and Observance

Eid ul-Adha in Saudi Arabia is a public holiday lasting three to four days, featuring Eid prayers, ritual animal sacrifices, charity, and festive meals. The Day of Arafat, observed a day before Eid, is considered the holiest day in Islam and is marked with fasting and prayer, especially for those undertaking Hajj.
