ECI trains BLAs to boost grassroot poll participation

BLA Training 2202525

NEW DELHI, MAY 22: The Election Commission of India has launched a two-day training programme for 229 Booth Level Agents (BLA-I & BLA-II) from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, representing 11 national and state political parties. The training, conducted bilingually in English and Tamil, is being held at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM), New Delhi.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar inaugurated the programme, stressing the pivotal role of BLAs in strengthening democratic processes. He highlighted that the training would empower them to carry out their duties in line with the Representation of the People Acts of 1950 and 1951, as well as relevant election rules and ECI guidelines.

This marks the second batch of BLAs to be trained at IIIDEM, following the earlier session for Bihar’s BLA-I agents held in April 2025.

Interactive sessions covered the legal responsibilities of BLAs, their role in ensuring accurate electoral rolls, and the appeal process under Sections 24(a) and 24(b) of the RP Act, 1950.

The ECI has also intensified engagement with political parties, holding 4,719 meetings so far—40 by Chief Electoral Officers, 800 by District Electoral Officers, and 3,879 by Electoral Registration Officers—with participation from over 28,000 party representatives.
