DSEK revises school timings amid heatwave

DSEK Directorate Of School Education Kashmir

Srinagar, May 22: Given the prevailing heat wave across the Valley, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has announced revised school timings for institutions across Kashmir.

According to the new schedule, Schools within the Srinagar Municipal Limits will operate from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM.

Schools outside the municipal limits of Srinagar and in other districts of the Kashmir province will function from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

The decision comes following growing concerns from parents and other stakeholders over students’ discomfort during school hours. Speaking to KINS, Education Minister Sakina Itoo confirmed that she had instructed the department to revise the timings after receiving multiple requests.

Minister Itoo acknowledged that the academic schedule had already been disrupted in recent weeks due to cross-border shelling.

“Some parents told me their children felt dizzy and uncomfortable during the morning assemblies. I have, therefore, directed the heads of departments to adjust the school timings accordingly,” she said.

She further advised schools to avoid conducting morning assemblies in open sunlight.

“Schools should hold assemblies in shaded areas to protect students from direct sun exposure,” the minister added.
