CRPF man killed in Srinagar attack; Hizb claims responsibility

Srinagar, July 24: A paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) man was killed and another injured after militants attacked a force party near Fire and Emergency Services department in Batamaloo area of Kashmir capital Srinagar on Tuesday.

IG CRPF Ravideep Sahi told reporters that militants fired upon the troopers and ran away from the spot. “It was a hit and run case in which one CRPF man was killed and another injured,” he said.

The deceased trooper was identified as Constable Shankar Lal of 23 BN.

Following the attack, the forces cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt to nab the attackers.

“Taking advantage of the crowd in the area, the assailants managed to flee,” the police spokesman said.

“In the process, two security forces personnel got injured in the firing incident who were subsequently shifted to the nearby hospital for medical attention where one personnel Ct Shanker Lal of 23Bn CRPF succumbed to his injuries. The other trooper has now been discharged from the hospital,” the spokesman added.

“Police has registered a case and investigation in the instant matter has been initiated. The initial investigation into the case has led to some tangible leads on which police is working,” he said.

Militant outfit Hizbul Mujhadeen owned the responsibility of the attack.

Hizb operational spokesman, Burhan-ud-din in a tele-statement to news agency KNS claimed the responsibility of the attack.
