The year 2024 has concluded on a positive note for the Kashmir valley’s handicrafts sector. The total export value of Kashmiri crafts from 2020 to 2024 reached an impressive Rs 3,477.31 crore. This growth encompasses four key categories: carpets, woolen shawls, paper mache and other items such as chain stitch, crewel and wood carving. Despite the severe disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21, the sector has not only recovered but has also surpassed previous benchmarks. The initial impact of the pandemic in 2020-21 was stark, with total exports plunging to Rs 635.52 crore. The carpet and woolen shawl sectors, traditionally the backbone of Kashmiri handicrafts, were hit the hardest, generating Rs 299.56 crore and Rs 172.53 crore, respectively. Other categories, including paper mache and wood carving, also faced declines, reflecting the global halt in trade and reduced demand for luxury items during the crisis. The subsequent year, 2021-22, saw a further decline in exports to Rs 563.13 crore, driven by lingering disruptions in global supply chains. Carpet exports fell to Rs 251.06 crore, while woolen shawls dropped to Rs 165.98 crore. Paper mache remained stable at Rs 13.25 crore, but other items experienced a decline to Rs 132.84 crore. This period was marked by uncertainty and a slow recovery, as international markets grappled with the aftereffects of the pandemic. However, this phase also served as a turning point, prompting stakeholders to rethink strategies. The year 2022-23 saw a dramatic turnaround, with total exports nearly doubling to Rs 1,116.37 crore. This recovery was fueled by a resurgence in global demand as markets reopened and consumer confidence returned. Carpet exports surged to Rs 357.21 crore, while woolen shawls experienced a remarkable rise to Rs 424.20 crore. The “other items” category also witnessed growth, reaching Rs 326.45 crore, driven by the increasing appeal of unique and culturally rich products. Although paper mache exports remained subdued at Rs 8.51 crore, the overall performance of the sector indicated a strong rebound. The momentum continued into 2023-24, with total exports peaking at Rs 1,162.29 crore, the highest in the four-year period. Woolen shawls emerged as the star performer, generating Rs 477.24 crore in exports, followed by carpets at Rs 317.33 crore. The “other items” category sustained its growth trajectory, contributing Rs 329.28 crore, while paper mache exports saw a notable increase to Rs 38.44 crore. This growth coincided with Srinagar’s rising prominence on the global stage, as the city recently hosted the World Craft Council’s 60th Jubilee Celebration extension programme. Srinagar’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City for Crafts in 2021 and its recognition as a World Craft City have further elevated its status as a hub of artisanal excellence. Heritage walks through old Srinagar city, where artisans have historically thrived, have gained popularity among tourists. These initiatives help to create opportunities for artisans to connect with a global audience.
