Covid-19 Spike in Asia: Know About the JN.1 Variant and Its Threat to India

Several countries in Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Thailand, are witnessing a noticeable rise in COVID-19 cases. Health officials and virologists are turning their attention to a new subvariant believed to be fueling this fresh surge — JN.1, a subvariant that traces its lineage back to Omicron.

JN.1, along with its related sub-lineages, has rapidly become one of the dominant strains circulating worldwide. Its rise coincides with a growing number of infections in regions with dense populations and international transit hubs.

In Singapore, the Ministry of Health has elevated alert levels as Covid-19 cases continue to climb. For the week ending May 3, the country reported an estimated 14,200 new infections, a significant increase from 11,100 cases the previous week. Hospital admissions have also surged by roughly 30%, prompting renewed concern among public health officials.

Hong Kong, too, is facing rising pressure. Health authorities there describe the current viral activity as reaching a “quite high” level. According to Albert Au, who heads the Communicable Disease Branch at the Centre for Health Protection, the city has recorded its highest positivity rate in respiratory samples in the past year. The same week also saw 31 Covid-related deaths — the most in any week over the past 12 months — along with a sharp uptick in severe cases requiring hospital care.

What is the JN.1 Variant?

JN.1 is a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant, descending from the BA.2.86 (nicknamed “Pirola”) strain — a variant already known for its high number of mutations. First detected in late 2023, JN.1 quickly spread across multiple countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

What distinguishes JN.1 is a unique mutation found in the spike protein — the component of the virus responsible for attaching to human cells. This change may contribute to increased transmissibility and some level of immune escape, allowing the virus to bypass antibodies developed from vaccines or prior infections.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), JN.1 has been classified as a “variant of interest,” which means it is under close observation, although there is no clear evidence yet that it causes more severe illness compared to other Omicron subvariants.

Is JN.1 Dangerous?

Currently, JN.1 does not appear to cause more serious illness than earlier strains of Omicron. Most reported cases have presented with mild to moderate symptoms, including sore throat, fatigue, cough, fever, and nasal congestion — all common traits of Omicron infections. Still, what makes JN.1 concerning is its ability to spread rapidly.

While hospitalizations have not seen a drastic surge globally, certain groups — especially older adults, people with underlying conditions, and the immunocompromised — remain vulnerable to severe outcomes if infected.

In Singapore, health officials attribute the current wave of infections to LF.7 and NB.1.8 — both variants that stem from the JN.1 lineage. Together, these account for about two-thirds of all sequenced cases in the country. Officials also believe that waning immunity among the population may be playing a role in the renewed surge.

The symptoms of JN.1 and its subvariants largely mirror those of previous Covid-19 strains: fever, dry cough, sore throat, fatigue, runny nose, headache, muscle pain, and in some cases, loss of taste or smell. Other less common symptoms may include eye irritation (conjunctivitis), diarrhoea, and mild gastrointestinal issues.

Do Current Vaccines Work Against JN.1?

The current generation of vaccines — particularly updated mRNA vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna — do offer protection against JN.1, especially when it comes to preventing severe disease, hospitalisation, and death. However, their effectiveness in preventing mild or asymptomatic infection may be reduced.

This is because, despite the mutations, the core structure of JN.1 still resembles earlier Omicron variants, which are the target of existing vaccines. Booster doses, especially those updated in 2023–2024, significantly improve the body’s immune response and enhance protection against JN.1.

Thus, vaccination remains a critical tool in managing the spread and severity of the virus, even as new variants emerge.

Should India Be Concerned?

As of May 19, India reported 257 active Covid-19 cases — a notable increase from 93 cases just the previous Friday. Though the numbers are still very low in comparison to earlier waves, a slight upward trend has been observed in some urban areas.

In Mumbai, doctors have recorded a mild rise in Covid-19 cases, mainly affecting younger individuals. So far, these cases have been reported as mild and self-limiting, and there is currently no indication of a larger wave. Nonetheless, health experts and government authorities are advising caution, especially in light of developments in nearby countries.

India’s public health system has maintained preparedness, with ongoing surveillance of respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and through the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Hospitals have been instructed to monitor for signs of influenza-like illnesses and cases of severe acute respiratory infection.

Quoting unnamed sources, news agency PTI reported that the situation in India is under control, and the government is closely monitoring international developments — particularly those in Singapore and Hong Kong — for any signs of potential escalation.
