Cop shot dead in Budgam

Srinagar, May 11: A cop was killed after suspected militants on Friday attacked a police guard in Wadwan village of central Kashmir’s Budgam district. A civilian was injured after army opened fire on youth after they were pelted with stones in adjoining Soibugh village.

An official said that the militants attacked a police post guarding a minority community at Wadwan in Soibugh area Friday afternoon. A policeman who was critically injured in the attack succumbed at a hospital, he said.

The spokesman said that the police “successfully thwarted” the weapon-snatching attempt in Wadwan.

“Militants today attempted to force their entry inside a Guard post at Budgam. Militants appeared outside the Guard Post in Wadwan Budgam and held-up SgCt Shamim Ahmad outside his Guard Post who was unarmed and was going to offer Friday prayers at a local mosque in the vicinity,” he said.

“Shamim was asked to lead toward the Guard Post however he raised an alarm and the alert jawans inside the Guard Post successfully foiled it,” he said.

The policeman, identified as Sgct Shamim Ahmad No 834 Bd (EXK 981992), was a resident of Check Hanjan Yaripora Kulgam.

Meanwhile, clashes broke out in Soibugh after youth hurled rocks at army vehicles heading towards Wadwan village following the attack.

An eyewitness said that army men opened fire to chase away the protesters.

A youth, identified as Adil Farooq Mir alias Majid Fayaz son of Farooq Mir resident of Galwanpora, Budgam suffered a bullet wound in his right thigh.

Mir was immediately shifted to nearby hospital where from he was referred to Srinagar hospital for specialized treatment.

Meanwhile, terrorist outfit ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack through its official news agency, Amaq.

The claim in Arabic roughly reads in English: “(Islamic State claims) killing of an element of Indian Police by the soldiers of Khilafah in the area of Wadwan in district Budgham Kashmir.”
