CJI will decide allocation of cases, constitution of benches: SC

New Delhi :Dismissing a PIL seeking framing of guidelines for allocation of cases and constitution of benches, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said the Chief Justice of India is “first among equals” and has the constitutional authority to decide the same.
A week earlier, senior advocate and former law minister Shanti Bhushan had filed the PIL in the Supreme Court for clarification on the administrative authority of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) as the ‘master of roster’ and seeking laying down of principles and procedures to be followed in preparing the roster for allocation of cases to benches.
He filed the PIL through his advocate and son Prashant Bhushan, who also wrote a letter to the apex court’s secretary general stating that the matter should not be listed before a bench that includes CJI Dipak Misra.
The PIL said the CJI’s authority as the master of roster is “not an absolute, arbitrary, singular power that is vested in CJI alone and which may be exercised with his sole discretion” and such an authority should be exercised by him in consultation with senior judges.
This petition assumes significance as on January 12 four senior-most judges – J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph – of the Supreme Court had called an unprecedented press conference and had said that the situation in the top court was “not in order” and many “less than desirable” things had taken place.
They had also raised the issue of allocation of important and sensitive PILs before “junior judges” of the apex court.

Smriti Irani alleges Priyanka Gandhi insulted Shastri

NEW DELHI: Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani on Wednesday accused Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of “insulting” Lal Bahadur Shastri as a purported video showed the Congress leader garlanding a bust of the former prime minister during her tour in Uttar Pradesh with the garland she had worn.
Irani wrote a limerick in a Hindi dialect to take a dig at Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
“In her “arrogance”, she chose a used garland, clapped, waved her hands and left after insulting Shastri,” Ms Irani tweeted, tagging the video.
The BJP leader also took a dig at the Congress over a woman’s accusation that its workers behaved inappropriately with her.
“It shows the real values of Congress,” Ms Irani alleged.
Wrapping up her three-day tour of Uttar Pradesh in Prime minister Narendra Modi’s constituency of Varanasi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called the coming Lok Sabha election a “new freedom struggle”.

Kamal Haasan’s party releases first list for polls

CHENNAI: Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam has released its first list of 21 candidates in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for Lok Sabha elections. The list, however, does not include Kamal Haasan. The second list for the remaining 19 seats would be released in Coimbatore on Sunday.
On whether he would contest, Kamal Hassan said, “I wish to contest but my party cadre will have to decide.” He added, “The announcement on March 24 (Sunday) would have surprises.”
Former IPS officer and the party’s Executive Committee member Mourya would contest from North Chennai, taking on DMDK’s Alagapuram Mohanraj and DMK’s Dr Kalanidhi Veerasamy. The only woman candidate, Kameela Nasser, Executive Committee member and wife of popular actor Nasser, has been fielded in Central Chennai. She would take on DMK’s Dayanidhi Maran and PMK’s Sam Paul.
Dr MAS Subramanian is MNM’s candidate for Puducherry. He had recently switched from the DMK.
A few days ago, CK Kumaravel, a well-known entrepreneur and Executive Committee member of the party resigned from the primary membership citing “politics”. Accepting his resignation, a statement from the party said he had posted on social media about his candidature for Chidambaram constituency even when interviews were still going on and that his explanation was not satisfactory.
Kumaravel claimed he was actually given the go-ahead to do preparatory work. Now the party has fielded T Ravi, a businessman for Chidambaram.
Launched a year ago, keeping fight against corruption and development of rural Tamil Nadu as its key focus, the MNM chose to not join hands with the two Dravidian parties – the ruling AIADMK and the DMK – it has been so critical of. From the beginning, Kamal Haasan had ruled out alliance with the BJP saying, “saffron is not our colour.” Initially, there was speculation that Kamal Haasan could ally with the Congress after the state Congress chief had hinted at it. A few days ago, a lesser known Republican Party of India had forged an alliance with the MNM.
Superstar Rajinikanth, who is yet to launch his party and has chosen to not contest Lok Sabha polls, had greeted Kamal Hassan. Thanking him and tacitly seeking his support, Kamal Hassan tweeted, “If good people supported all 40 seats would be ours.”
In a shift from the norm mainstream parties follow, MNM has given tickets to several non-members, who are involved in social work, health care and human rights issues.

Lucknow: Mayawati, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Dalit powerhouse, took on the Yogi Adityanath government and said his claims that the state did not witness any riots in the last two years is a “farce”.
Yogi Adityanath, who completed two years in office on Tuesday, presented a report card on his government on Wednesday. He had said not a single riot had taken place in the state since March 2017.
“BJP’s claim that UP remain riot-free in past 2 years is farce. During the period BJP leaders & ministers remain awfully busy in lifting of heinous cases against them. And what about mob lynching etc which brought bad name to the country and ultimately Hon court had to intervene.” Mayawati tweeted in a thread, after wishing her followers on Holi.
BJP’s claim that UP remain riot-free in past 2 years is farce. During the period BJP leaders & ministers remain awfully busy in lifting of heinous cases against them. And what about mob lynching etc which brought bad name to the country and ultimately Hon court had to intervene.
Yogi Adityanath had said on Wednesday: “In 2012, there were 227 major communal riots. In 2013, there were 247 such riots. In 2014, there were 242 riots. And 219 riots in 2015 and more than 100 in 2016 – in which properties worth crores were lost.”
“However during thee BJP government, not a single riot took place. Nor were there any incident of acid attacks or kidnapping,” he claimed.
Mayawati’s ally, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, had said that the the two years of the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh have been like a “curse” for the people
Though there has been no major communal violence in Uttar Pradesh during the past two years, the mob violence in western Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr had grabbed national headlines last year. A mob of 400 people, including right-wing activists, had clashed with police in Bulandshahr district in December last year. A police officer and a young man were killed in the frenzy.
In January last year, a 22-year-old man was shot dead during a”Tiranga Yatra” by some people after which a series of violent incidents had taken place in Kasganj district.
The state government then denied permission for any such procession on Independence Day in the western Uttar Pradesh city.
The Chief Minister had said when he assumed office in March 2017, debt-ridden farmers were committing suicides and that Uttar Pradesh had become “synonymous with murder, loot and riots.”
