China is set to open the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in June, a record-breaking engineering marvel that will cut travel time across a massive canyon from one hour to just one minute. The two-mile-long bridge, part of a £216 million (Rs 2,200 crore) project, stands over 200 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower and weighs three times more.

Dubbed a “super project” by Chinese politician Zhang Shenglin, the bridge is seen as a symbol of China’s advanced engineering and a key boost for tourism in Guizhou province.

Built using 22,000 metric tonnes of steel trusses—equivalent to the weight of three Eiffel Towers—the structure was erected in just two months. Chief Engineer Li Zhao expressed pride in seeing the project come to life, calling it a profound personal achievement.

Suspended high above a deep canyon, the bridge joins a long list of towering structures in the region, which is home to nearly half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges. In 2016, China completed the Beipanjiang Bridge at a height of 1,854 feet.
