State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has officially named its upcoming 5G service ‘Q-5G – Quantum 5G’, following a public naming contest. The announcement was made via BSNL’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on June 18.
“You named it. We made it happen! Introducing THE BSNL Q-5G – Quantum 5G,” read the post, thanking participants for their support and highlighting the name’s reflection of the “power, speed, and future” of BSNL’s next-gen network.
BSNL Launches Quantum 5G FWA in Select Circles
In a parallel update, BSNL UP East shared that Quantum 5G FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) services have been officially inaugurated. The launch event saw the participation of BSNL’s CMD, board members, and senior officials.
“Today marks a historic moment as the Hon’ble CMD BSNL inaugurated the revolutionary BSNL Quantum 5G FWA service,” the regional account posted.
Q-5G FWA: Enterprise-Focused High-Speed Internet
A banner on BSNL’s official website describes Q-5G as “the Quantum Leap” — offering blazing-fast, SIM-free fixed wireless access. The service is initially targeted at enterprises and not regular consumers, with plans starting at ₹999 per month in selected cities and circles.
The service acts as an Internet Leased Line (ILL) over a 5G FWA backbone, delivering high-speed, wire-free internet, but without voice capability.
70,000 BSNL 4G Towers Active, More on the Way
Meanwhile, BSNL continues to expand its 4G infrastructure. Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandrasekhar said that after the deployment of 100,000 4G towers, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will seek Cabinet approval to install another 100,000 towers under the next rollout phase.
So far, about 70,000 of the installed 4G towers are operational, laying the groundwork for a smoother transition to full-fledged 5G services.
