Awantipora: Boat capsizes in Jhelum; 7 rescued, 2 missing

Srinagar, May 08: Even before the wounds of the Srinagar boat tragedy could heal, another boat carrying nine laborers capsized in Jhelum at the Hatiwara area of Awantipora in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district

Seven persons were rescued while two others are missing.

An official said a boat having nine non-locals on board capsized at Hatiwara while with the efforts of locals, seven persons were rescued while two others are still missing.

He said that the SDRF teams, police, and locals had started the operation to rescue the two missing persons.

On April 16, the boat, which was carrying around 15 persons, capsized in the Jhelum in Gandbal. In the incident, eight people died and six bodies, including twin brothers and their mother, were recovered from the water and ten others survived the heartwrenching mishap.

The body of another minor boy was fished out from Jhelum after 11 days.

An official said the body of the boy was retrieved near Old Zero bridge near Rajbagh area of Srinagar.

On   April 22, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha met the family members of the victims who lost their lives in the heartbreaking boat tragedy.

The Lt Governor expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and assured all help and support to them.

“The UT Administration stands shoulder to shoulder with the families in this hour of grief,” he said.

LG was accompanied by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Dr Bilal Mohi-ud-Din Bhat, SSP Srinagar Ashish Kumar Mishra, and others.

Lt. Governor conveyed his commiserations to the victims’ families and assured them of all assistance and support from the J&K UT Administration.

“Met the family members of the victims who lost their lives in the heartbreaking boat tragedy on April 16 and expressed my condolences. Assured all help and support,” said the Office of LG J&K in a post on X.
