“The response of local youth during the rally has been overwhelming. A total of 1506 locals of Tangdhar attended the rally. The recruitment will not only facilitate job opportunity for the local youth at the doorstep but also enable them to build a brighter future for themselves and their families,” said an Army spokesperson in a statement on Wednesday.

“Wide publicity for the event was given for the initiative and this ensured that all local persons desirous of serving the nation in earnest would be afforded an opportunity to do so. Consequently, a large number of aspirants from the region and adjoining areas, participated in the rally, to enroll as porters,” the spokesperson added.

Interestingly, the rally takes place when the authorities in Kashmir are trying all possible methods to stop public gatherings in an effort to keep the ongoing coronavirus pandemic at bay.

As such, educational institutes, shopping malls, eateries, restaurants, clubs, have all been ordered to shut down.
