Airport makeover

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the expansion of Srinagar International Airport at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,677 crore. It will mark a major milestone in strengthening aviation infrastructure and connectivity in the Kashmir Valley. Spread over 73.18 acres, the new Civil Enclave project will feature a state-of-the-art terminal building spanning 71,500 square meters (including 20,659 square meters of existing structure), designed to serve 2,900 passengers during peak hours and an annual capacity of 10 million passengers per annum. The expanded apron will accommodate 15 aircraft parking bays, including one widebody (Code E). The project will also include the construction of a multi-level parking facility for 1,000 cars. Architecturally, the new terminal will reflect a harmonious blend of modern design and the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir, incorporating traditional elements such as intricate woodwork and locally inspired craftsmanship while maintaining operational efficiency through streamlined passenger processing areas, spacious lounges, and advanced security and check-in facilities. Sustainability remains a cornerstone of the development, with features such as advanced water harvesting systems, maximized natural lighting to reduce energy consumption, and the use of locally sourced, eco-friendly materials to minimize the carbon footprint. This project is targeted to achieve a 5-star GRIHA rating. An elated Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the project will boost the economy, strengthen connectivity, and encourage tourism. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said it marks a defining leap in connectivity for the Valley. It is designed to serve 2,900 passengers during peak hours. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah termed it a transformative step for Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu have once again proved that Jammu and Kashmir is very close to the heart of the central government. Better connectivity will ensure more tourists, more investment, and more jobs. Having said so, the central government now needs to restart international flights from Srinagar airport. It has been a long-pending demand of Kashmir Inc to operate direct flights to Gulf countries. It will not only help in increasing international footfalls but will also give a boost to our handicrafts and horticulture sectors. We can ship our goods directly to Gulf markets. The Modi government has done a lot for J&K.  Operating international flights will be the biggest gift to the people of Kashmir. To start with, the government can start flights to Saudi Arabia and Dubai. A large number of Kashmiris go on Umrah every year. Undoubtedly, the Srinagar-Jeddah circuit will be profitable given the number of pilgrims going on pilgrimage. If not daily, the government can start with weekly flights to test the waters. The international flights will create a feel-good factor and send a positive message across the global community.
