PM Modi visited the site of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad and later held a high-level review meeting with Gujarat government officials to assess the response and relief efforts following one of the deadliest aviation disasters in India’s recent history.
The tragic crash occurred on Thursday afternoon when Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, crashed moments after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft, carrying 242 people on board, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, plummeted into the BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital complex in the Meghaninagar area and burst into flames.
Officials have confirmed that 265 people were killed, including several on the ground. Only one person, a passenger seated in 11A, survived the crash.
After visiting the crash site and the city’s civil hospital earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi chaired a detailed review meeting at the GujSail building near the airport.
During the briefing, officials presented the sequence of events following the crash and outlined the ongoing rescue, relief, and identification efforts.
“We are all devastated by the air tragedy in Ahmedabad. The loss of so many lives in such a sudden and heartbreaking manner is beyond words. Condolences to all the bereaved families. We understand their pain and also know that the void left behind will be felt for years to come. Om Shanti,” the prime minister said in a post on X.
At the review meeting, the Prime Minister issued clear directives to ensure that all necessary support reaches the affected families and that identification of victims through DNA analysis is expedited.
He also stressed the importance of long-term rehabilitation support for the injured and families of the deceased.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Jal Shakti Minister and Gujarat BJP president C R Paatil, and Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu attended the meeting alongside top bureaucrats and emergency response officials.
The BJP supremo also visited the only survivor of the crash, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who is currently undergoing treatment at the trauma ward of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. According to officials, he had been traveling to London with his brother, who perished in the crash.
