Srinagar: “My life was devastated the day he was hanged. I cannot tell you how difficult it is to live without him. Whatever is left in me, it is only for my son, Ghalib,” says Tabassum Guru.
Life has been tough for Tabassum, wife of Afzal Guru, who was hanged and buried in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on on February 9, 2013.
Surviving to see Ghalib become what his father wanted him to be, she says, “He (Afzal Guru) had a dream. Ghalib is doing well and Insha-Allah will follow his father’s dream.”
“Not a moment passes when we don’t remember him.”
On the upcoming fifth death anniversary of Afzal, Tabassum vows to fight for the return of his mortal remains.
“We have been appealing for the return of his mortal remains, but nobody listens to us. The government won’t help us in this regard, as they only hanged him. But I will fight for his mortal remains till I am alive,” she says.
“The Hurriyat leaders are detained for a long time now. It has become a norm for us to demand the mortal remains of Afzal Sahab.”
Tabassum claimed that the government was not allowing her family to observe the death anniversary of her husband “peacefully”.
“The government has imposed restrictions everywhere in the town. Everywhere, CRPF men are seen patrolling the village in their vehicles. We fear that they won’t allow us to follow the ritual to observe Afzal Sahab’s death anniversary tomorrow,” she said.
The guests and villagers were not allowed by the forces to visit to her home, Tabassum claims.
“We mostly serve people on this day and call religious clerics to recite the Holy Quran. But today, we couldn’t get the essentials to prepare food for the expected guests. We are now managing to get, at least, the most required items from the market,” she says.
