Added frisking, checkpoints in run up to R-day today

Srinagar, Jan 25: Ahead of Republic Day event on Saturday, Kashmir Friday witnessed intensified frisking at various places in Srinagar and other districts while as the forces laid several checkpoints to ensure smooth celebrations on Saturday.
Witnesses said that police set up barricades at various places including Lal Chowk here during which pedestrians as well as the commuters were being thoroughly frisked before being allowed to move ahead.
They added that the large numbers of forces personnel were deployed at many places in Srinagar city.
In view of the R-day main function, being held at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Sonwar here, all the entry and exit points were under close security vigil while some important roads were also suspended for vehicular movement.
Earlier, the city traffic police had said that due to security reasons the traffic movement from Sonawar upto Ram Munshi Bagh Road stretch including Dalgate-Ram Munshi Bagh, Radio Kashmir-Ram Munshi Bagh & Gupkar-Ram Munshi Bagh will remain suspended from 24th to 26th of January.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP), Dilbagh Singh said that foolproof security arrangements have been made to ensure smooth conduct of Jan 26 celebrations across the State.
He added that “militants as well as Pakistan always try to disrupt such functions aimed to create scare among the people. But police and other security forces have made special and adequate security arrangements for smooth conduct of celebrations.”
