Srinagar, Dec 31: Road safety remains a pressing concern in Srinagar, with 4 lakh traffic challans issued this year and 57 lives tragically lost in road accidents.

The data, shared by traffic police, highlights rising unsafe driving practices in the city.

A significant number of challans were issued for violations such as speeding, driving without helmets, and ignoring traffic signals, which are major contributors to accidents.

SSP Traffic Srinagar, Muzaffar Ahmed Shah, told the news agency KINS, “Despite issuing 4 lakh challans this year, the high number of accidents and fatalities is alarming. This underscores the need to strengthen road safety awareness and enforcement. Changing drivers’ mindsets and strict adherence to traffic rules are imperative.”

He added that traffic police are committed to reducing accidents through enhanced patrols, better signage, and public awareness campaigns.

Authorities are also considering revising traffic regulations to manage the city’s growing traffic volume more safely and efficiently.
