12 civilians, 4 cops injured in Shopian grenade attack

Srinagar, Jun 04: Police on Monday said that 16 persons were injured when militants lobbed a grenade at Batapora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

A police spokesperson said the grenade exploded inflicting injuries to several civilians and few policemen.

He said the grenade exploded along the roadside amid the civilian population.

“Around 12 civilians are reportedly injured in this explosion. A young girl has received critical injuries in this explosion while four policemen also sustained injuries in this incident,” he said.

He said the injured have been shifted to nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Sources in District Hospital Shopian identified the injured policemen as: Inspector Gulzar Ahmad SHO police station Shopian is injured in left leg, Altaf Ahmad (Constable) is injured in left hand, Javid Ahmad (Constable) is injured in left eye, and Nazir Ahmad (policeman) injured in back. Policemen Altaf Ahmad and Javid Ahmad are still in hospital while the rest were discharged from the hospital.

Hospital sources said two women—Farida and Nadiya–were shifted from District Hospital Shopian to Srinagar’s SMHS Hospital for further treatment. Both the injured women are from Shopian’s Sedow area.

Militants have carried out a series of grenade attacks on security forces and politicians since last week despite New Delhi declaring a unilateral but conditional truce during the holy month of Ramadan.

Clashes erupted in south Kashmir’s Shopian district between government forces and youth on Monday soon after a grenade was lobbed on police party.

Reports said that scores of youth pelted rocks on forces personnel deployed near the local Jamia Masjid who retaliated with tear smoke shelling.


Grenade lobbed at CRPF in Pulwama, two troopers injured

Srinagar, Jun 04: At least two CRPF men were injured after unknown persons hurled a hand grenade at a CRPF party in south Kashmir’s Pulwama on Monday.

The grenade attack took place near Tahab chowk Pulwama.

According to police sources in the incident, two CRPF men sustained injuries in the blast who have been hospitalized.

Earlier, unknown persons have lobbed a grenade at Shopian which caused injuries to at least 16 people including four policemen and 12 civilians.


IED detected, defused in Sopore outskirts

Srinagar, Jun 04: Police on Monday claimed to have detected an IED on Nathipora-Wadoora area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

SSP Sopore Javaid Iqbal said that the security detected the IED placed on roadside by militants in the area.

The IED was later defused by Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) without causing any damage, SSP said.

Jaish-e-Mohammad militant outfit on Monday claimed the responsibility for it.

“Our cadres trigger the IED in which several Indian security force personnel were injured and the vehicle also got damaged at Nathipora,” a spokesman of the militant organization told GNS in a statement issued here. (GNS)
