Video of teacher thrashing students goes viral

Srinagar, Dec 22: A video of a teacher allegedly beating students in a school at Baramulla district of north Kashmir went viral on social media on Saturday.

The video has been taken at the Immamia Public High School at Boniyar.

In the two-minute video, the students are seen sitting on the floor with their notebooks open in front of them.

The first student in the video is seen kneeling and begging the teacher to stop thrashing him, while his arm is held tightly by a senior boy.

The second student is dragged from the last row, but left unbeaten after he breaks down.

The wooden cane then makes a way to the girls’ row, and they are made to stand up while the teacher hits them on their hands.

Taking a strong note of the child right violations, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Baramulla has sent a notice to the administration of the school.

“It was clearly seen that children are being ruthlessly beaten by the teachers inside the classroom. The committee (Bench of Magistrates) comprising of Chairperson,  Shaeeq-u-Rahman, and members Waseem Hassan Parray, Rehana Rashid, Nazir Ahmad Lone and Mohd Shafi Lone observed that the act seen in the video is the violation of Child Rights as laid down under J&K Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2013 and Rules 2014 and laws laid down by  Supreme Court and High Court of J&K,” reads the notice.

Chief Education Officer Baramulla, Abdul Ahad Ganai expressed ignorance over the matter.

“I have absolutely no knowledge about it. I will take the appropriate action once I see this video,” Ganai said.

This is not the first time that such incidents have been reported in the valley. Recently, a teacher from a leading school of Srinagar city was dismissed for thrashing a male student for carrying a mobile phone in classroom.
