Dehradun, June 25: At least two people lost their lives and 10 others are reported missing after a bus carrying 20 passengers plunged into the Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district on Tuesday. Eight people have been rescued so far, and a joint rescue operation by the police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is underway.

Preliminary reports suggest the bus was en route to Badrinath when the driver lost control while navigating an uphill stretch, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and tumble into the river. Swift response teams, along with local residents, rushed to the scene to begin rescue efforts. Some injured passengers have been transported to nearby hospitals.

Officials said that several passengers managed to jump off the bus before it plunged into the river, aiding their survival.

Senior officials from the police, administration, and disaster response agencies are supervising the ongoing operation. The local administration has urged people to refrain from spreading unverified information.

Visuals from the site showed locals forming a human chain to assist injured passengers up the slope. The bus, a 31-seater, was carrying 20 individuals, including the driver. Many of the passengers were families from Rajasthan and Gujarat undertaking the Char Dham Yatra.
