Thievery topped 2018 list of crimes in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 6: Theft was one of the most common crimes reported in Kashmir in 2018.

According to official figures accessed by The Kashmir Monitor, 1817 theft cases were registered in the year across the valley, out of which, 820 were disposed-off.

The property stolen in all these cases, figures show, is valued at Rs 14.73 crore.

A police official said that the actual number of theft cases would be higher as most of them go unreported.

“Most of the cases are not reported due to personnel reasons or terrain of the area,” the official said.

As per the data, burglary cases followed by vehicle thefts were the most reported.

“762 burglary cases were registered in 2018. Out of these, 342 cases have been disposed-off, whereas 420 cases are still being investigated. The valuation of property estimated to be stolen in burglary cases is pegged at Rs 5.35 crore, of which property valued at over Rs 1.02 crore was successfully recovered by police,” the data reveals.

Police has registered 387 vehicle theft cases in the year, of 148 cases have been disposed-off.

“The valuation of motor cycles stolen is estimated to be over Rs 6.10 crore, of which motor cycles worth Rs 2.28 crore were successfully recovered by police,” it shows.

A total of 75 robbery cases have been registered in 2018.

Out of these, 27 cases have been dealt with, while 48 cases are still under investigation.

Total number of forest theft cases registered in the year was 306.

Of these, 170 cases were dealt with, whereas 136 cases are still under investigation.
