Srinagar, Oct 21: In the aftermath of the tragic event at Kulgam in which at least six civilians were killed after a shell exploded at an encounter site in Laroo area, police on Sunday appealed people to stay away from encounter sites until they are sanitised to prevent such incidents.

“Citizens are requested not to visit any encounter site until the site is sanitized by the bomb disposal team. We seek cooperation of people in this regard for avoiding accidents of such nature,” a J&K Police spokesman said.

Giving details of the incident, the spokesman said that after three militants were killed in the encounter, a large congregation entered the gunfight site “before it was cleared which led to an explosion in which six people died.”

The spokesman identified the three slain militants as Shahid Ahmad Tantaryof Wangam Shopian, Zubair Ahmad Lone of Ahwatoo, Kulgam and Yazil Ahmad Makrooof Arwani, Bijbehara.

“Arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot,” he added.

“After the conclusion of encounter as the forces moved out, the locals from the area started assembling at the site of encounter and had apparently fiddled with some stray explosive materials leading to an explosion. Consequently some individuals sustained grievous injuries and some of the injured identified as Ubaid Shah, Tajamul, Irshad Ahmad Padder, Uzair Ahmad and Masroor Ahmad unfortunately succumbed when brought to hospitals, besides five other injured are undergoing treatment. It is pertinent to mention that this incident occurred post encounter,” the spokesman added.v
