Srinagar, Feb 4: Demanding revocation of the recent State Administrative Council’s (SAC) decision of adjusting Regularized Rehbar-e Taleem teachers (RReTs) in the cadre of general line teachers, scores of unemployed youth on Monday staged a protest here claiming the decision will affect their future employment prospects.

“We have come here to protest against the SAC’s decision where they have given a roadmap for the  adjustment of RReTs. By the decision, degree holders like us will have less or no chance of getting employment because no recruitment will take place in next 20 years,” said an aspirant.

Chanting slogans against Governor Administration, the protesters were holding banners in their hands which read, “we want justice” and “revoke SAC decision save our future”.

Recently, SAC, under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik, in December 2018, had approved the action plan devised by the committee, setup in August 2018, for the adjustment of RReT teachers who were working under ‘Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan’ – a centrally sponsored scheme into one regular teaching cadre so that all the teachers shall get regular salary at a time.

Another protestor said, “Whenever we get a new government, there is always a manifesto of ending unemployment but I think they are planning to end unemployed not unemployment by these policies.”

Dr. Hilal Qazi, who is doing a post doctorate from Kashmir University, said that it had come to their notice that the RETs would be regularized in the lecturers’ cadre. “If you have to recruit the undergraduates and graduates through these policies without any screening then what is the fun of us pursing our PhDs then? We appeal the Governor to ‘rethink’ about this decision,” Qazi said.

He further said that the Universities and Colleges should be closed then if RETs are regularised like this.

Danish, a political science student claiming to have qualified National Eligibility Test (NET), said “RET teachers are like our brothers and sisters. We don’t have any animosity with them but decisions like these are affecting us. Why was PM in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ wishing cricket bats and laptops to be in the hands of Kashmiri youth then? Policies like these are responsible for the radicalization of youth.”

The aspirants collectively appealed the Governor administration to revoke the policy as soon as possible so that the future of young generation, who wants to excel in academics, is also benefitted.

The Kashmir Monitor tried to contact to the concerned Higher Education Department officials but despite repeated attempts nobody received the call.
