Srinagar, Jan 1: Alleging of facing government apathy, the recently elected councilors and chairmen of various municipal committees (MCs) and councils Tuesday threatened to resign if their demands are not met.
Staging protest against divisional administration on Tuesday at Press Enclave, the councilors of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district said that government so far has done nothing to empower them.
“We contested the elections among all odds. We were even threatened, and yet contested the elections just to work for the people. However, the way government is treating us, we don’t feel that we would be to deliver on the ground what we intended to,” said Masroor Banday Chairman, Handwara Municipal committee.
Referring to the three-day long training programme that started at Institute of Management and Public Administration (IMPA) on December 31, he said that “we have decided not to join it.”
“We reported on Monday, but were surprised when we were told that we have to manage the accommodation on our own. Having no option, we ourselves arranged the accommodation for which we had to pay Rs 7000 as the rent. If government doesn’t address our issues, we would be forced to resign,” Banday added.
Chairman, Municipal Committee Uri, Bharat Kumar recently slammed the government for not providing them the funds for developmental works.
“A month has passed, we have not received a single penny for carrying out the developmental works.
“We fought elections by putting our lives at risk. The government had promised us that it will provide funds, but so far it has failed to deliver on its promises. Without out funds, how can we give respite to the people, who elected us?” he questioned.
Chairman, Anantnag Municipal Committee, Hilal Shah blamed the government for adopting “lackadaisical attitude” towards the issues faced by them.
“It is amazing and anguishing that the government has not been able to provide funds and other facilities to the municipal committees and councils for development of wards particularly for sanitation, construction of drains, hygiene, man power and shifting of garbage from the roads.”
