Srinagar, Mar 11: A young man who worked as a salesman at a shop in Srinagar was tortured to death in Ratnipora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said.
In a statement, a police spokesman said Muhammad Shafi Sofi (aged around 24 or 25), son of Ghulam Hyder, a resident of Somboora area of Pampore, was found dead on Ratnipora road today morning.
“He was working as salesman in the business unit of Shah Electronic Shop at Srinagar. Dead body taken in SDH Pampore for autopsy which is being conducted by a team of doctors in presence of executive magistrate,” he said.
Earlier reports had suggested that the youth had suffered bullet injuries in his legs, however the spokesman said no bullet injury was found on his body.
“Initial reports suggest that he was tortured. There are multiple deep cut wounds on his legs and other body parts. No bullet injury found on body,” he said.
He said the youth was strangulated after torture. “There was a rope around his neck which indicates the possibility of strangulation besides torture,” he said.
The spokesman said that a case has been registered in police station Pulwama. “Investigation (has been) taken up,” he said.
