Prez nominates former CJI Gogoi as Rajya Sabha member

Srinagar, Mar 16: The President of India has nominated Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi to Rajya Sabha as a nominated member.

The notification to this effect has been published in the Official Gazette on Monday. It reads as follows:

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) of Article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, the President is pleased to nominate Shri Ranjan Gogoi to the Council of States to fill the vacancy caused due to the retirement of one of the nominated member.”

As per Article 80 of the Constitution, the twelve members are to be nominated by the President to Council of States, who are having special knowledge or practical experience in respect of such matters as the following, namely: Literature, science, art and social service.

Justice Gogoi has been nominated to fill the vacancy caused due to the retirement of one of the nominated member, Senior Advocate K.T.S. Tulsi. Other nominated members in the Rajya Sabha are Swapan Dasgupta, Dr. Subramanian Swamy, Dr. Narendra Jadhav, Suresh Gopi, Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, Roopa Ganguly, Ram Shakal, Rakesh Sinha, Dr. Sonal Mansingh, Raghunath Mohapatra.
