Srinagar, Feb 4: An infant undergoing treatment at G B Pant hospital, died due to the negligence of the hospital staff, alleges family from Kreeri area of Baramulla district.

The baby girl, born at Noora hospital five days ago, was admitted to the GB Pant hospital on Saturday after developing some complications.

According to the family, the infant, who was in the intensive care unit, was declared dead by the doctors on Sunday.

“The baby had burn marks on the legs and other parts of the body. They had kept the baby very close to the blower (heater) which resulted in the death,” alleged her maternal uncle, Sheikh Rizwan.

“She was doing well. On February 2, even ventilator was removed in the morning .Only glucose was being administered. At 11:00 PM, I went into ICU, noticed a black coloured blower near to her. There were burn marks on her body. I reported same to the doctor, to which he asked us to treat her yourself if they were not satisfied with doctors, “he said.

The family said on the same day they received a call from ICU. “When we reached, a person came and said that the infant is serious. Later we got to know she had expired. The hospital didn’t provide us ambulance, “he added.

The family refuted the claims that there was no room heater in the ICU, where baby was admitted since February 1.“To hush up the case, the doctors along with the paramedics didn’t allow us to remain in the hospital after her death,” Rizwan said.

However, the hospital authorities denied the claims and said the baby was suffering from a rare disorder.

Medical superintendent, G B Pant, Dr Kanwarjit Singh told The Kashmir Monitor that newborn had internal health problems and what appeared like burns were actually disseminated Intravascular Coagulation.

Meanwhile, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar on Monday ordered a probe into the death of a newborn at GB Pant Hospital and constituted a five-member committee to investigate the issue and submit the report within 48 hours.

The order of GMC read, “In reference to the Medical Superintendent GB Pant hospital, Srinagar letter no GBP/11049 dated 04/02/2019 an inquiry committee is hereby constituted to investigate the complaint”

President, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK), Dr Suhail Naik said that matter should be investigated thoroughly.
“Negligence if any, should be dealt strictly. The committee should go through the CCTV footage. By picture, one cannot differentiate between DIC gangrene and burn gangrene,”he said.

Advisor to governor, Vijay Kumar said that he will look into the matter, “I will talk to Principal, Government Medical College (GMC) Dr Samia Rashid.”

Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday condemned the ‘criminal’ negligence at GB Panth hospital where a family alleged that their infant died to negligence of the hospital administration
