Bisara (dadri): With the accused in the 2015 lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq on the suspicion of possession of beef sitting in the front row, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath invoked the incident at a rally in his village Bisara in Greater Noida.
“Who doesn’t remember what happened in Bisara? The way the Samajwadi Party government tried to curb our emotions here,” said Adityanath, while campaigning for the BJP’s Gautam Buddha Nagar candidate, Mahesh Sharma.
Alleging that “in Western UP, if you were riding a bullock cart or a buffalo cart and by chance stopped at a tobacco shop or a tea-stall, buffaloes, bullocks would get stolen”, he added, “When we came to power, we shut all the illegal slaughterhouses in one go.”
Key accused in the lynching case Vishal Singh Rana, the son of local BJP party worker Sanjay Rana, and Puneet were among those in the crowd. Vishal claimed that 16 of the 19 accused were part of the audience.
Vishal had been charged under IPC Sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder), among others. However, the charges are yet to be framed, with the case pending in a fast-track court. The next date for hearing is April 10. Puneet was not named in the FIR but was arrested three months later on the basis of Akhlaq’s daughter Shaista’s statement.
Granted bail by the Allahabad High Court in 2017, like all the other accused, Vishal told The Indian Express, “Yes I was there at the rally with the others. We all support the BJP.”
At the rally, the BJP leader accused the UPA government of “serving biryani” to terrorists and being soft on terrorism. “But, the BJP has only two ways of dealing with terrorists — bullet or bomb.” He also claimed that before the BJP came to power in the state, DJ music was not permitted during ‘Kanwar Yatra’. “We gave a free hand to all the pilgrims.”
Adityanath accused the previous governments of dividing people on the basis of caste and indulging in “politics of appeasement”, unlike the Modi government that worked for all. “Earlier there was the Congress at the Centre whose supremo had said that a certain community has the first right on the country’s resources and by saying this they divided the majority, and so did the SP and BSP governments.”
The CM also accused the previous governments of “harassing” the majority community by lodging “false” cases against them and thus creating a “breeding ground” for riots. “During my two years, has there has been any Bisara-like incident? Has there been any safety concern to sisters and mothers? No. This cannot happen because we have said that we will guarantee safety and development to 23 crore citizens of the state, bring everyone into the mainstream. We won’t differentiate between people but won’t engage in appeasement politics,” he said.
He added, “I have been wanting for a long time to come to Bisara and meet people of this region and nearby areas.”
There were three issues before voters, Adityanath said. “On April 11, rise above any differences, look at development, look at public benefit policies and look at the firm resolve to fight terror when you go out to vote.”
Adityanath also slammed Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s comments regarding why she had not visited the Ramjanmabhoomi site at Ayodhya, calling them an “insult” to the Hindu faith. “She said she did not visit since the matter is sub-judice. Nothing can be more humiliating for us. The world looks at Ramjanmbhoomi as the birth place of Rama. She didn’t visit since it would offend a particular community… I want to ask, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are out on bail in matters pending in court. Do you not meet them? Your husband is out on bail. Do you not meet your husband? You should clarify.”
He said, “Last time they (the Congress) had won 44 seats (in Parliament). This time they will get only four seats and be finished.”
