Mumbai :World champion weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won India’s first gold medal with a record-breaking performance, on Day 1 of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, in Gold Coast on Thursday.
Chanu, who claimed a silver at the previous edition of the Games in 2014, went one step better to finish top in the women’s 48kg category.
Chanu claimed gold with a Commonwealth Games record lift of 196kg — including 86kg in the snatch and 110kg in the clean and jerk.
Earlier, weightlifter Gururaja Poojary opened India’s medal tally, claiming silver in the men’s 56 kg category.
