New Delhi:Sourav Ganguly is one of the best captains India has ever had on a cricket field. Not only did he usher in a new era in terms of an aggressive playing style, Ganguly also handpicked talented cricketers, backing them to the hilt, who went on to take India to the pinnacle of world cricket.
The one man, who comes close to Ganguly in his way of leading the team is current captain Virat Kohli. Kohli’s eagerness to win at all costs and give it back to the opponents in the same coins mirrors the psychology that Ganguly had instilled in the team.
The former captain rates Kohli very highly both as a batsman and as a captain, but in a recent interview to Cricbuzz, Ganguly maintained that Kohli will be remembered more in his capacity as a captain than as a world conquering batsman.
“Virat Kohli will not be judged just by the runs he scores. That’ll remain, he will keep scoring runs till the time he plays because he’s a very good player. But for me, Virat Kohli will be judged by how he takes Indian cricket with him. And that’s very, very important. Hope he has the right people around him, to guide him and make sure that life becomes a little easy for him,” Ganguly said during an interaction with cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle.
Ganguly, who led India to 21 Test wins as captain, lauded Kohli for the efforts he has been putting in to develop a new culture of fitness in the team.
“I think he’s trying to do something different. Get the boys fit, get the boys tough. I see a change in Umesh Yadav, see his bowling. You have to have fast bowling to win away from home.
That’s a good landmark that he’s set up, it’s not the only landmark but it’s important that you pass that. He’s got the goals for his team, he works hard himself and I think he’s on the right track,” the southpaw opined.
Virat Kohli has currently led India to 21 Test wins and has lost only five matches. Another win in the upcoming five-match series against England will help Kohli pip Ganguly to the second spot, behind MS Dhoni, who holds the record for most Test wins (27) as an Indian captain.
