A couple found a treasure of gold coins underneath the kitchen floor in the United Kingdom.

The couple has been living in the house for 10 years. The treasure trove includes 264 gold pieces, which date back more than 400 years, was uncovered during renovation work at the North Yorkshire home in July 2019, according to reports.

The couple stumbled upon it after lifting the floorboards of their 18th-century property. The coins were stored inside a metal can buried under six inches of concrete.

Interestingly, the couple had no clue about the coins despite living on the property for over 10 years.

The real worth of the coins was realized when experts looked at the contents of the can. Some of the gold coins date from 1610 to 1727, said reports.

The expert analysis was done by London auctioneers Spink & Son, who visited the property at the request of the couple. Further analysis by the team revealed the coins originally belonged to the Fernley-Masters, a wealthy merchant family from Hull,

“This is a fascinating and highly important discovery. It is extraordinarily rare for hoards of English gold coins to ever come onto the marketplace. This find of over 260 coins is also one of the largest in archaeological records from Britain. They’re not mint perfect coins, they are coins that have had a hard life,” auctioneer Gregory Edmund was quoted as saying Metro.co.uk.

“It is a wonderful and truly unexpected discovery from so unassuming a find location,” he added.
