Jawahar Tunnel Avalanche: One more dead body recovered, toll 8

Srinagar, Feb 9: Authorities on Saturday said that one more body was recovered from the debris of an avalanche at Jawahar Tunnel along Srinagar-Jammu highway, taking the death toll to eight.

An official said that the body of policeman Parvaiz Ahmad, was recovered today from the Jawahar Tunnel area.

The avalanche had hit the north portal of Jawahar Tunnel on the Qazigund side in Kulgam district on Thursday evening. The ten persons comprising six policemen, two fire service personnel and two prisoners were buried alive.

The rescue teams saved two police personnel on Friday, while seven bodies were also recovered.

In a similar incident, one person was killed after a snow avalanche struck Sunbradi village of Kokernag on Thursday.

Meanwhile, two non-locals were killed in a landslide in Ramban district along the Srinagar-Jammu highway on Friday.

The incident occurred when they were crossing by foot at Maroog area, when landslide suddenly hit them, said the officials.

The deceased have been identified as Pramod Mankotia of Himachal Pradesh and Sanjit Lakara of West Bengal.

Snow slide kills minor boy in Sopore

Srinagar, Feb 9: A seven-year-old boy was killed after a snow slide falls from a rooftop of a house which hit him in Chahar village of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday late evening.
Reports said that the boy Irfan Ahmed Khan son of Ghulam Hassan Khan of Chehar Kalhool died on the spot after the snow slide hits him.
SSP Sopore Javeed Iqbal also confirmed the incident. (GNS)
