New Delhi:The International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Dave Richardson has played down ICC’s SWOT analysis that listed overreliance on revenues from India as a “weakness”.

Instead, Richardson said that the continuous backing of such a huge cricket economy as India has to be viewed as a major strength. He was talking with the media after meeting BCCI’s Committee of Administrators chief Vinod Rai and BCCI chief executive Rahul Johri. Richardson also said that there is no ‘real’ threat of a rebel body in cricket.

Excerpts from his media interaction:

It is listed as a potential weakness but I would actually focus on it as strength. We need Indian cricket as part of global strategy. It’s certainly a strength that we have such a huge cricket economy behind us. It is not a big issue from the weaknesses point of view.
If anything, it’s a reminder to other countries that they cannot rely on India alone, they need to do something themselves.

It’s a historical fact. Don’t forget whenever you do a strategy paper, they do a SWOT analysis. Sometimes it will focus on threats or weaknesses that exist. Sometimes these are real and big risks, sometimes they are just there, not a threat. And this is the case here.

We have got three formats of the game internationally. And that is what members want to stick to. Historically there has always been innovation at domestic level and we don’t want to necessarily stop that. It is quite challenging with three formats of the game as it is, we are certainly not looking any further. Same is the case with T10 cricket.
