Washington – Former US President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, his office announced on Sunday. The diagnosis followed reports of urinary symptoms, and medical tests revealed a prostate nodule. Biden’s family is currently reviewing treatment options with his doctors.
The statement noted that the cancer, while aggressive, is hormone-sensitive, allowing for potential treatment and management. The disease has been graded with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) – one of the most severe classifications for prostate cancer, indicating a high risk of spread and a serious prognosis.
This diagnosis adds to the Biden family’s history with cancer. In 2015, Biden’s son, Beau Biden, died after a battle with brain cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men, with one in eight being diagnosed in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. Although often treatable when detected early, it remains the second leading cause of cancer-related death among men.

The news drew responses from across the political spectrum. Former President Donald Trump, Biden’s political rival, wrote on Truth Social, “We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”
Vice President Kamala Harris, who replaced Biden as the Democratic nominee after he dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, expressed her support on X, stating: “Joe is a fighter… We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”
Former President Barack Obama also offered prayers and encouragement, noting Biden’s years of work on cancer research: “Michelle and I are thinking of the entire Biden family… Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe.”
Biden withdrew from the 2024 race in July 2024, following a poor debate performance against Trump, which sparked renewed scrutiny over his mental and physical health. Since then, several recordings and reports have surfaced highlighting his cognitive decline, including a soon-to-be-released book on his controversial decision to seek re-election.

In light of his recent diagnosis, a 2022 comment by Biden went viral again. Speaking in Massachusetts, Biden had said, “That’s why I and so damn many other people I grew up with have cancer,” referencing pollution exposure in Delaware. The White House had later clarified that he was referring to skin cancers removed prior to his presidency.
