Baramulla, Mar 8: A complete shutdown was observed in Delina Baramula after an elderly man was crushed to death by a police van in Delina area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district last evening.
Abdul Aziz Ahangar, 65, died after he was hit by a police vehicle on Wednesday evening. The family has alleged that police tried to arrest their son Tawseef Ahmad Ahangar on the same evening and while trying to foil police attempt, father of the youth, Aziz, was hit by the police vehicle resulting in his death.
Family of deceased accused police of deliberately driving over him after the family resisted arrest of their son.
Mehraj-ud-din Ahanger, the eldest son of Abdul Aziz said that his younger brother Tauseef was sipping tea with his friend on Wednesday evening when police came to arrest him.
“He went to see off him, after having tea. Suddenly we heard him cry ‘Mouji’. We ran out and saw dozens of police men beating him and bundling him in the vehicle. Our father (Abdul Aziz) was offering Isha prayers in a nearby mosque. He came out after offering prayers and pleaded before the police party to leave Touseef as he has done nothing wrong,” son of Abdul Aziz said.
Wife of Abdul Aziz, Khalida Begum while talking to The Kashmir Monitor said that they pleaded the police to let their son go.“They drove over my husband and killed him on the spot. They (police) are lying now. There is a difference between accident and murder. How can an accident occur, half a kilometer away from main highway and that too inside a mohalla road,” a wailing Khalida begum said.
Baramulla Police in a statement issued to media said that the driver of the police vehicle Constable Abdul Ahad (2757/B) was arrested and the vehicle in question was seized.
“A case FIR No 39 /2018 under section 304 A) was registered against driver. Further investigation into the matter is going on,” the police statement said.
Meanwhile, large number of people attended the funeral prayers of deceased amid sloganeering. =
Officials in the olice Chowki Delina told The Kashmir Monitor that all the allegations are baseless and Aziz died in an accident.
