Srinagar, Mar 1: A day after Government of India announced a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami (J&K), a socio-religious organisation, police swooped on the offices of JeI across Kashmir and sealed many of its offices.
In Kupwara, on the direction of district magistrate Kupwara Ansul Garag, a joint team comprising police and civil administration on Friday afternoon searched the District office of Jamaat-e-Islami at main town Kupwara and later sealed it.
A police official based in Kupwara said no FIR was registered in this regard so far.
“The District office of JeI was searched and later it was sealed by the orders of District magistrate,” he said.
District Administration Bandipora also sealed office of Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir at Bagh area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora District.
Sources said that a police team led by DySP and SHO Bandipora along with revenue officials sealed the office.
The move comes following government of Delhi’s decision to ban the prominent socio-religious organisation, days after arresting scores of its leaders and activists in a massive crackdown. Pertinently Jamaat-e-Islami district President Bandipora Hafiz Muhammad Skindar Malik is under detention in Aragam Police Station.
Reports said clashes broke out in Pulwama, when police tried to seal the JeI office there. “Youth resorted to stone pelting when police tried to lock the JeI office in Pulwama, clashes were on till late evening,” the reports said.(KNO)

Ban ‘unconstitutional, undemocratic’: JeI
‘In touch with legal experts, will move court’
Monitor News Bureau
Srinagar, Mar 1: Jama’at-e-Islami (JeI) Jammu and Kashmir termed the imposition of ban on the party as “unconstitutional, undemocratic and unethical”.
A statement issued by JeI said the ban imposed by Ministry of Home Affairs on JeI is “unconstitutional, undemocratic and unethical.”
It said the allegations leveled against the Jama’at are “concocted and baseless”.
“Jama’at will move to court and in this regards deliberations are going on with legal experts. Jama’at carries its activities peacefully which are transparent and visible. It works on priority basis for propagation of Islamic teachings, development of society and dignity of humanity,” the statement read.
“Jama’at exhorts its cadre to remain disciplined and patient whatever the circumstances will be and be hopeful that Almighty Allah will ensure favorable and supportive atmosphere,” it added.

Govt will examine before banning JeI-run schools: Ganai
Srinagar, Mar 1: Advisor to Governor Khurshid Ahmad Ganai Friday clarified that there will be no random ban on Jamaat-e-Islami run schools.
News agency Kashmir News Service quoted Ganaie saying that the government will “examine” before banning any schools.
“There is no automatic process. We will examine things,” he said.
It may be noted that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) banned Jamat-e-Islami for the next five years. The decision came almost a fortnight after the more than 250 of its activists including the entire leadership were rounded up.
A notification issued by the MHA termed the party’s activities “prejudicial to internal security and public order”. The order said the party is “in close touch with militant outfits and supports extremism and militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.” It said the party is involved in “anti-national and subversive activities” intended to “cause disaffection”.
The government said if the group’s activities are not curbed immediately, it is likely to “escalate its subversive activities including an attempt to carve out an Islamic State out of the territory of Union of India”, continue advocating the secession of Jammu and Kashmir, and propagate “anti-national and separatist” sentiments.
Kashmir’s grand old socio-religious organisation that was the main force behind the 1987 Muslim United Front (MUF), the Jamaat has been contesting polls between 1965 and 1987.
Indira Gandhi banned Jamaat in 1975 emergency, and later with the onset of militancy, it was banned again. It is the third time since its inception in 1942 that the party was termed “unlawful”.
At the peak of militancy, the party had a lot of its cadres joining militancy. It, however, distanced from militancy in 1997. The subsequent developments led to its vertical split with Syed Ali Geelani staying away from the party for giving low priority to the politics of the place.
Jamaat formed most of the persons who were detained in the last two weeks across Kashmir after the Lethpora car bomb explosion. (KNS)
