Srinagar, March 21 : Jammu-Srinagar highway on Tuesday remained closed for the fifth consecutive day due landslides and authorities say that it was unlikely that the thoroughfare would be restored for the traffic by the end of the day today.

Police said that the highway, only all-weather road connectivity of the Valley with the outside world, remained blocked due to landslide at Dalwas village along the highway in Ramban district. “Men and machinery is on job but it will take time to clear the debris,” the official said, adding, “Decision regarding the movement of vehicles will be taken after clearance of road”.

A portion of the highway at Dalwas has sunk, resulting in the suspension of vehicular movement on the strategic thoroughfare.

Sources said the trucks laden with essential goods and oil tankers bound for Kashmir have been stopped at Udhampur and Jammu.

Inspector general of Police, Traffic J&K, T. Namgyal- IPS told GNS that there was no chance of reopening the thoroughfare today.

“Hopefully, the highway may be restored for traffic tomorrow but we will communicate it,” he added.
