COVID19: Huge spike in cases as 13 test positive in J&K today, toll reaches 33

Srinagar, Mar 28: In a sudden spurt in coronavirus cases in Kashmir, as many as 13 COVID-19 positive cases were reported in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. Those included 10 in Kashmir and three in Jammu division.


The huge increase takes the total number of coronavirus positive cases in Kashmir to 25 and in the entire J&K to 33.

Thirty of them are active cases, one patient has passed away, while two have recovered.

 “Tough to be harbinger of unpleasant news. But being informed is being prepared. 7 more positive cases in Srinagar today. 4 cases- history of contact with already positive cases of religious congregation; other three- travel history outside J&K contacts being traced,” tweeted Government spokesperson Rohit Kansal.

Later in the day he tweeted: “Hardly do I finish my press briefing -28 cases-that I get more unpleasant news -5 new positive cases- 2 in Srinagar, 3 in Jammu- all contacts of previously positive ones ; All Jammu cases asymptomatic. We are at 33 now.”


Earlier, the authorities said that 18 reports are still awaited, while 5919 travellers and persons in contact with suspected, positive cases have been put under surveillance.

Quoting official sources news agency Global News Service reported that the 13 cases included a 56-years-old man from Jawahar Nagar Srinagar who has travel history to Indonesia, and four persons, aged between 28 to 35 years, from Hajin area of Bandipora district who had come in contact with the 65-year-old man who died of the disease on Thursday. Then there is a couple, a 45-year-old man and his wife (40) from Ahmad Nagar Srinagar. They too have travel history to Saudi Arabia.

The eighth case of the day, as per reports, is a man from Ganderbal. He was in quarantine at SKIMS and tested positive.

An official said the seven tested positive in the day are presently admitted to Chest Diseases Hospital (CD) Dalgate here and their samples had been taken recently.

“The test reports were received today and they came out to be positive,” the official said.

With these eight fresh cases, the tally of COVID-19 patients in the Kashmir region has gone up to 25 and one of them, the 65-year-old man from Hyderpora, originally a resident of Sopore, died on Thursday.

A 67-year-old woman, who was the first COVID-19 patient in the Valley, has recovered at SKIMS Soura.

Sources said that doctors at SKIMS also fear an increase in cases. “There are at least 3 patients with high viral load and their test reports are expected by this evening or tomorrow,” they said. 

The government has so far tested 532 persons of which 486 came out negative, 33 tested positive, while 18 reports are still awaited.
