Srinagar, Sep 1: Despite directives by the government, the departments have not been updating their official websites.

This could be gauged from a recent government order, directing its departments to update official websites on a regular basis, a move intended to provide updated information.

The government has written to departments to adhere it directives in view that most departments were not updating content and hiding information to people.

An order of the General Administration Department says, “It has again come to the notice of authorities that official websites of various Government Departments are not being properly updated, thereby presenting a bad image of the Government and its functioning.”

As per the order, the website updation is a “recurring task”, which needs to be looked regularly by the designated officers/officials of the department.

“It is as such requested to all Administrative Secretaries of all the departments to personally monitor the updation of their Departmental Websites and ensure its strict compliance as per checklist attached in a time bound manner,” reads the order.

The government had directed departments several times to update official websites on a regular basis in the past as well. However, the websites of most of the departments are either not updated or remain defunct, or the old and irrelevant information has not been removed from there.

“This issue has been brought into the notice of authorities but to no avail. It seems that authorities are not concerned about updating the information on the website,” an official of the General Administration Department, said.

The official said that updating websites was one of the measures the government directed to make administration “responsive” and “transparency” in governance are yet to be implemented.

“For general public, apart from the media, department websites are a main source of information about the works done by the government and that it is necessary to update websites of departments regularly,” the official said.

When PDP-BJP formed the government headed by Mehbooba Mufti, the authorities announced several measures to make the administration responsive and transparency in the governance. The officials were directed to ensure their implementation.

However, the official said that officials have given poor response to the government’s directives. The PDP-BJP government ended after the later withdrew support from the alliance.
