As Anushka travels with Virat, BCCI admits to touring ‘Headache’

Mumbai: Entering the fourth month of their tour of Australia and New Zealand, many members of the Indian cricket team have been joined by family on the road.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma has been a regular feature on the sidelines, seen supporting the team during T20 series against Australia in November and then later in the Test series that followed. After Australia, Anushka also accompanied the team to New Zealand where Virat Kohli has been ruled out of the last 5 fixtures to allow the Indian skipper some rest.

A BCCI source however has drawn focus on the logistical problems that the board faces when cricketers are accompanied not just by their wives but at times their children as well.

“If the team is travelling with less number of members, it is easier to manage. It’s easy for BCCI staff to make off-field arrangements. Right from booking tickets to rooms, the entire management of handling the arrangement is with BCCI,” Times of India quoted a board official.

Apart from Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and also Ishant Sharma wives have been travelling with the team and the official says managing transport and hotels for them all, apart from organising match tickets is tough right now but will become a ‘nightmare’ if this continues during the World Cup this summer.

“It would be a logistical nightmare if this arrangement – of families travelling with the players – continues to be there in England for the entire duration of the World Cup. It is difficult to manage all of them together. There is also the problem of arranging match tickets for their families. It has to be regulated. This is not a question of money,” the official added.
