Srinagar, June 25: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone, VK Birdi, on Wednesday said multi-layered security arrangements have been made for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra
Addressing the media after a mock exercise in south Kashmir, Birdi said that this year’s Yatra will be held under heightened vigilance and deeper security coordination compared to previous years.
“As compared to last year, this time we have multi-layered and in-depth security arrangements to make the Yatra safe and comfortable for the pilgrims,” Birdi said.

Security measures have been systematically divided across different sections and sectors along the Yatra route and throughout the valley. Each area is currently undergoing Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) drills, aimed at enhancing preparedness and refining the response of security forces in the event of any contingency.
“The purpose of these drills is to ensure that our operations and responses during any contingency are more prompt and refined. Such drills are being carried out today in all parts of the valley—be it camps, road sections, or interior sectors—so that all security forces remain alert regarding their tasks and know exactly what specific tasks they are assigned, allowing them to effectively handle any situation,” IGP said.
To streamline security operations, the entire Yatra security arrangements have been divided into multiple zones and sectors, spanning both the Pahalgam and Baltal tracks. Each zone has a dedicated security layout, and today, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) drills were carried out to test readiness and refine emergency response protocols.
“The drills have been conducted across the valley, including base camps, road stretches, interior sections, and other key locations. The aim is to enhance coordination among all security units and ensure that everyone knows their specific responsibilities in case of any contingency,” the IGP explained.
According to officials, the mock drills involved joint participation from J&K Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), emergency response units, disaster management authorities, medical teams, and traffic regulators. The coordinated simulation exercises focused on quick response, evacuation, and communication efficiency in case of any security threat or natural emergency like landslides or cloudbursts.
IGP Birdi also underscored the importance of public cooperation, stating that the success of the Yatra has historically depended on the active support of local communities.
“These yatras have always been successful because of the wholehearted support of local people. This year too, there is tremendous enthusiasm among the locals to welcome the pilgrims, assist them, and ensure they have a safe and memorable experience,” he said.
