Girls outshine boys as 33k students pass class 12 exams

Srinagar, Jan 11: Over 61 per cent students have qualified the annual Class 12 examination the results of which were declared by the J&K Board of School Education (JKBOSE) on Thursday.
Out of the total 55,163 students who appeared in the exam that concluded in the second week of December, about 33,893 qualified with a pass percentage of 61.44.
Outshining boys in terms of the pass percentage, 64.31 per cent girls have qualified against 58.92 per cent of their counterparts who have passed the exam.
More girls—4,767—have got distinctions as compared to 4,267 boys.
While 4,040 students have failed, the number of students who would have to reappear in one or more subjects is 17,230, as per the JKBOSE figures.
In the exam, as per the board figures, science stream has witnessed the highest pass percentage with 77.93 per cent students in the stream qualifying followed by commerce and arts streams with pass percentages of 71.15 per cent and 48.92 per cent, respectively.
In the science stream, Muhtashim Rafiqi and Faheem Rashid, both from Burn Hall School Sonwar have, secured 1st and 2nd positions getting 494 (98.8 per cent) and 491 (98.2 per cent) marks, respectively.
With just a single mark behind the second topper, Faheem, Sabiya Syeed from Shah Rasool Memorial (SRM) Welkin Higher Secondary School, Sopore, has secured the 3rd position getting 490 marks equivalent to 98%.
While Muhtashim and Faheem expressed surprise over the top their positions, Sabiya said, “I was expecting more marks.”
Muhtashim, the topper in science, said, “It honestly has come as a surprise.”
“I expected around 480-490 marks, but I did not know I would be figuring at the top,” he said.
Over the preparations that went into securing the top position, Muhtashim remarked, “Just normal stuff. I studied just one to two hours a day.”
“My opinion is that coaching centres aren’t suited for 12th class. They are needed for competitive exams only,” he said.
Asked about his career plans, he said, “I am preparing for the JEE engineering exams. Let’s hope for the best.”
“I want to thank my parents, especially my mother, and my brother. All credit goes to them, after Almighty Allah,” he said.
Over his feelings about his performance in the exam, Faheem Rashid, the second topper, said, “I can’t express it in words. It was a surprise, but I was expecting marks more than 480.”
“I was not that kind of a student who would study the whole year. I concentrated fully for four months prior to the examination. Alhamdulillah, it paid off,” he said.
Saying that science stream needed “more hard work”, Faheem said the support of his uncles, parents, and teachers helped him.
Faheem, too, is also eyeing JEE mains exam.
Feeling “very great” over her top position, Sabiya, the 3rd topper, said, “Nothing is difficult if a student is interested in a stream.”
Thanking her family and teachers at school, Sabiya said, “Nothing was possible without their support.”
An aspiring doctor, Sabiya said, “Since my childhood, I wanted to become a good doctor.”
Securing 485 marks each, Afreen Nazir from Islamia Higher Secondary School, Rajouri Kadal, Farisa and Mehreen Hilal, both from Green Valley Educational Institute, have secured top 3 positions in commerce.
In arts, Durdanah Masoodi from Government Girls Higher Secondary School Baramulla, Munazah Shafi from Government Girls Higher Secondary School Kothi Bagh and Madeeha Khan from Green Valley Educational Institute have got the top positions securing 487, 484, and 483 marks, respectively.
Congratulating the qualifying students, Chairperson JKBOSE, Veena Pandita, said the board “unprecedentedly declared the class 12 results this year in the shortest period”.
